In a new interview, Rocky reflected on how Rihanna helped him navigate grief, legal challenges and personal struggles years before they built a life together.
Rihanna supported A$AP Rocky years before their friendship became a romance, the rapper said while recalling her presence during some of his lowest moments.
In a preview clip circulating of his upcoming appearance on “The Jason Lee Show,” Rocky discussed their relationship. The full interview is scheduled to air Wednesday, Aug. 5.
A$AP Rocky opens up about how Rihanna stood by him through some of the darkest moments of his life
"When my dad died, she was there for me. When I got locked up in Sweden, she was there for me. Every time I'm at my lowest… she always there for me. That's really my friend." pic.twitter.com/xAG9GKFglq— 𝕵𝖆𝖘 (@awgecentral) August 3, 2026
“She really is a strong Black woman, and she held me down when I was at my lowest,” Rocky said. He recalled several times Rihanna stood by him, including his 2019 detention in Sweden and the criminal case involving former friend Terell Ephron, also known as A$AP Relli.
Rocky was acquitted in February 2025 of two felony assault charges stemming from a 2021 confrontation in Hollywood. Rihanna attended portions of the trial and was present when the jury returned its verdict.
His most personal account involved the death of his father around Christmas 2012. Rocky said he was crying on a bathroom floor in Paris when Rihanna called to congratulate him after his debut studio album, “Long.Live.A$AP,” reached No. 1.
After Rocky told her he was struggling, Rihanna rushed to his hotel. He recalled that he stopped answering his phone, but she somehow gained access to his room, checked on him and stayed to speak with him. Rocky described the moment as proof of the friendship they shared before becoming a couple.
The pair’s connection dates to 2012, when Rocky appeared on Rihanna’s “Cockiness” remix and performed with her at the MTV Video Music Awards. They were romantically linked years later and have since built a family with sons RZA and Riot and daughter Rocki.
