Moments ago, the streaming giant confirmed it will stop submitting its numbers amid an ongoing disagreement over how streams are weighted, a move that could significantly impact chart outcomes for artists who thrive on the platform.
The announcement came directly from Lyor Cohen, YouTube’s global head of music, who shared the news via the YouTube Music blog.
At the center of the dispute is Billboard’s methodology, which apportions greater value to paid subscription streams than ad-supported ones.
While Billboard recently adjusted its ratio to narrow the gap, YouTube argues that all streams should be treated equally.
Cohen said:
“We believe every fan matters and every play should count equally.”
So, what does this mean moving forward?
YouTube will continue submitting data to Luminate, Billboard’s primary data partner, but maintains that the current formula no longer reflects modern listening habits.
Notably, streaming now accounts for the vast majority of U.S. recorded music revenue.
Billboard responded by defending its approach, stressing that different forms of fan engagement play distinct roles within the music ecosystem and expressing hope that YouTube will reconsider.
Time will tell how this impacts the broader music and chart landscape.
With that, what are…
