10 Black voices making sense of politics, one podcast at a time

In honor of International Podcast Day, here are some Black-led podcasts keeping audiences informed about current events and policies.

Whether you’re catching up on the news during your morning commute, folding laundry, or getting your steps in, there’s no shortage of voices competing for your ears. But when it comes to making sense of politics, especially with the midterm elections just around the corner, who you’re listening to matters.

Today is International Podcast Day, and there’s no better time to refresh your queue with shows that center Black perspectives on the issues shaping our lives. From candid group-chat-style banter to deep dives into policy and power, these Black-led political podcasts break down what’s happening in Washington and beyond, why it matters for our communities, and what we can actually do about it.

Clock it with Symone & Eugene

“Clock It” invites listeners into the group chat conversations of journalists Symone Sanders Townsend and Eugene Daniels about politics, society, culture, and how they intersect. Off-the-cuff, engaging, and sprinkled with fun, the weekly podcast keeps viewers tapped into current events without causing burnout. 

America, Actually 

Hosted by Astead Herndon, “America, Actually” describes itself as a “new kind of political podcast for a country redefining itself.” Looking beyond a single administration, the show explores policies, political discourse and some of the most pressing questions Americans are asking through weekly conversations with people in politics, news and voters. 

Assembly Required with Stacey Abrams 

Each week on “Assembly Required,” former Georgia State representative Stacey Abrams uses her knowledge and expertise to break down the biggest issues Americans face into digestible, actionable items, while introducing listeners to figures trying to make positive change. The show’s focus is “connecting the people and pieces in order to make our union a little more perfect.” 

Native Land Pod

For those who need their political commentary served with both fire and nuance, Native Land Pod is essential listening. Angela Rye, Bakari Sellers, and Andrew Gillum guide listeners through the political landscape, wielding insights, unapologetic analysis and unraveling the threads that connect Black communities and marginalized communities in America. 

The Don Lemon Show 

With his signature, outspoken truth-telling that gets to the heart of what’s actually at stake, Don Lemon’s daily show welcomes a variety of guests to discuss topics spanning politics and social issues to pop culture and current events

Pod Save the People 

Exploring social justice, politics, culture and the way they intersect, “Pod Save The People” is hosted by civil rights activist DeRay Mckesson, Sharhonda Bossier and Myles E. Johnson.
