The 18-year-old granddaughter of Martin Luther King Jr. says her parents instilled in her the importance of voting from an early age.
Yolanda Renee King, the only grandchild of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, is making her voice heard at the ballot box for the first time.
The 18-year-old marked the milestone on Election Day, Nov. 3, 2026, after years of anticipating the opportunity to participate in the democratic process.
Speaking about the experience in an interview with CNN, King described the moment as deeply personal, reflecting on how her parents, Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters King, instilled in her the importance of voting from a young age.
“I would say it is a very meaningful day for me. I mean, I’ve been waiting for this day for as long as I can remember,” King said.
She recalled accompanying her parents to the polls growing up, watching them exercise their right to vote while wishing she could do the same.
“I remember being really excited to finally be of age to vote,” she said. “My parents, from a young age, taught me the importance of the vote, so they would take me to the polls.”
King said she would sometimes feel disappointed that she could not participate, even playfully pretending she had voted by wearing the “I Just Voted” sticker her parents gave her.
Now, the experience is no longer something she has to imagine.
“I think it’s such a personal experience that now I will be able to say, yes, I was able to get my voice across through my parents and through friends who could vote before me, but now I can really put it in my voice,” she said.
The moment carries particular significance given her family’s history in the civil rights movement. Her grandfather dedicated his life to fighting for racial equality and expanding access to the ballot box.
For King, voting represents an opportunity to actively participate in a process she has long watched from the sidelines.
“I’m such a hands-on person, so I always love to be part of the process,” she said. “I can’t believe it, and I’m so excited that this day has finally come.”
King’s first vote comes as Americans head to the polls in the 2026 midterm elections, with control of Congress and numerous state and local offices at stake.
