‘World controls that narrative’: Lizzo reveals she’s made peace with allegations against her as lawsuit from ex-backup dancers continues

The singer says she has stopped fighting public perception and is instead focused on growth, self-reflection and her work.

Three years after first being sued by her former backup dancers, Lizzo firmly believes there’s a “version” of her that people have run with, yet she no longer fights how people perceive her.

The multi-platinum singer was a guest on “TODAY” for their Sunday sitdown series earlier this week. When asked about her ongoing lawsuit where three of her former backup dancers filed suit for sexual harassment and overseeing a hostile work environment, she admitted she’s made her “peace” with that perception of her.

“I had to make peace with the fact that there’s a version of Lizzo that exists now that the world controls the narrative and I don’t,” the Grammy winner said around the 5:30 mark of the interview. “But what I can control is who I really am.”

The litigation against Lizzo has seen various twists and turns in recent months. Claims of fat shaming from the singer were dismissed from the suit, and a separate harassment and discrimination suit filed by a former stylist was dismissed in September.

She didn’t define herself as a “fighter” against said allegations, affirming that she is a “lover.”

“I think that is the business that I’m in now because I do realize it’s a headline game,” she said. “I’m like, ‘Okay, how many headlines can I have out there about the things that I’m doing that I’m proud of and that I actually did?'”

She added, “My biggest takeaway is that everything that happens to you, good or bad, is an opportunity for growth. It’s an opportunity for self-reflection and to learn about yourself. And even if you don’t like parts of yourself, deal with it and work on it. The person you become at the end of that is someone you can’t even imagine. And you fall in love with them.”
