The upcoming film “Women Like Us” is the latest Black-led production backed by Barack and Michelle Obama’s media company Higher Ground.
A new film is coming to Netflix, bringing together some of the leading ladies of Black Hollywood. Whoopi Goldberg, Jenifer Lewis, Vanessa Williams, Vivica A. Fox will co-star in the forthcoming comedy “Women Like Us,” directed by Tasha Smith.
“[The film] follows a recently widowed woman who is dragged to the Hamptons by her lifelong best friends and sister on what should have been her 30th wedding anniversary,” the comedy synopsis reads, per Netflix. “The weekend becomes a reckoning with grief, marriage, and the sisterhood that’s carried them throughout the years — as well as the realization that dreams don’t have an expiration date. In other words, there’s plenty of emotional baggage coming along for the trip.”
With writing by Ali Kinney and Tracy Oliver, the film will be produced in collaboration between the Oscar-winning Macro Film Studios, behind films like “Fences” and “Judas and the Black Messiah,” and former president Barack and Michelle Obama’s media company, Higher Ground. Since launching their production company in 2018, the Obamas have produced a number of projects featuring Black talent, including the Broadway show “Proof,” along with a number of shows and films on Netflix:
“Starting 5”
“Rustin”
“Working: What We Do All Day”
“Descendant”
“Court of Gold”
“Becoming”
“The Later Daters”
“Fathehood”
“Leave the World Behind”
“The Light We Carry: Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey”
