Spotify is taking a stand against AI-generated music.
The platform announced Tuesday that it has removed more than 50 million “slop and spam tracks” from its recommendations this year.
Full story below…
The figure comes from an update on how Spotify says it is “putting human artistry first.” This follows the platform’s efforts last year to strengthen AI protections.
Spotify representatives explained the reasoning. They said:
“AI-generated slop and spam don’t belong in your recommendations, and we’ve made changes to keep them out and protect the listening experience. This year alone, we’ve taken more than 50 million slop and spam tracks out of recommendations. This is in addition to more than 75 million spammy tracks we’ve removed from our platform altogether for serious or repeated violations of our rules.”
The platform’s process for identifying slop and spam uses multiple methods. It does not rely exclusively on AI detection technology. Related efforts include the recent launches of AI Credits and AI Persona badges. However, Spotify noted that its “work isn’t finished.”
The move follows similar actions from competitors. Over the summer, Tidal announced that AI-generated music would not be eligible for royalties. The platform said it is “committed to protecting and rewarding organic creativity.”
Public pushback against AI music has grown. Artists including Olivia Rodrigo and Tyga have faced scrutiny over the technology. Rodrigo has said she will “never” use AI in her music.
