Shakira is stepping up to help her homeland.

The Colombian superstar has pledged $1.25 million to help rebuild schools damaged by the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10.

Shakira traveled to Quibdó, the capital of Chocó, on Monday as recovery efforts continue. Nearly 200 schools reportedly sustained damage following the earthquake, which killed hundreds.

The $1.25 million commitment brings together several partners. Shakira and Live Nation are contributing $500,000, while the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund is adding another $500,000 and CAF is providing $250,000.

The funds will be distributed through her Fundación Pies Descalzos.

Centering the long-term impact on children, the 49-year-old said:

“What worries me the most is that schools are not rebuilt once this emergency is over. Every day that children don’t go to school is a day they miss out on their future.”

Philanthropist Howard Buffett accompanied the singer on the visit and announced that his foundation will separately support the reconstruction of 10 additional schools.

“When she calls, I come.”

Shakira’s foundation has worked in Chocó for more than two decades and currently operates two schools in the region.

She is not alone in lending support. Karol G, Marc Anthony, and Chayanne are among the Latin stars who have also contributed to relief efforts.
