Reggie McFadden, the comedian and actor who made audiences laugh on “Def Comedy Jam,” “In Living Color” and a host of popular television shows, has died at 57.
McFadden’s sister, author Bernice L. McFadden, confirmed his death to The Hollywood Reporter. According to The Hollywood Reporter’s report, the U.S. State Department notified the family that McFadden died in Tanzania, where he had been living for the past 18 years. His family does not know when he died or the cause of death.
For Black television audiences who grew up on the comedy boom of the 1990s, McFadden was a familiar face.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, McFadden turned to comedy after deciding it could help him avoid ending up in the projects across the street from his neighborhood. His breakthrough came in 1991 when he appeared on HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam,” a showcase that became an important launching pad for a generation of Black comedians.
According to his biography on The Comedy Store’s website, McFadden was invited to perform on the series and was “a huge hit right away.”
He went on to appear in 23 episodes of the fifth and final season of “In Living Color” from 1993 to 1994, taking on various characters and contributing to the irreverent sketch comedy series created by Keenen Ivory Wayans.
His television résumé also included appearances on “Martin,” “Moesha,” “Coach,” “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper” and “Getting Personal,” where he starred alongside Vivica A. Fox, Jon Cryer and Duane Martin.
McFadden also appeared in films including “Jacob’s Ladder” and “Little Nicky.” In 2001, he appeared on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” as Officer Burt, a neighbor of Larry David’s character.
Beyond acting, McFadden continued performing stand-up, including a Comedy Central special and appearances on several late-night programs.
In his later years, McFadden made a life in Tanzania, where he pursued business ventures in entertainment and gold mining.
He is survived by his sons, Jaron and Myles; his mother, Vivian; and siblings Bernice, Misty and Kris.
