Netflix has acquired the rights to ‘The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable.’ Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Joanna Natasegara, the documentary lifts the lid on the extraordinary story behind Wu-Tang Clan‘s controversial one-of-a-kind album ‘Once Upon a Time in Shaolin.’

Full story below…

The film follows Dutch-Moroccan rapper and producer Cilvaringz, born Tarik Azzougarh. A devoted Wu-Tang fan in his teens, he eventually worked his way into the Hip-Hop collective’s inner circle and was mentored by RZA.

At the heart of the documentary is the creation of ‘Once Upon a Time in Shaolin,’ the 31-track project for which just one physical copy was produced. It sold at auction for $2 million in 2015, becoming the most expensive musical work ever sold at the time.

Its buyer was Martin Shkreli, the controversial entrepreneur who was later convicted of securities fraud.

Speaking about the five-year journey of bringing the story to screen, Natasegara said:

“For the last five years making this film has been a labour of love and discovery for me. Initially I was inspired by a teenhood love of Wu-Tang and a story about the secret album too intriguing to miss.”

RZA serves as an executive producer on the film, which explores the wider themes of community, talent, tenacity, and innovation surrounding the unlikely journey of the record.

‘The Disciple’ premiered at Sundance and will make its Netflix debut on October 16.
