The basketball legend’s latest decision is affecting opening week, Christmas Day and nationally televised games, according to the NBA commissioner.
Adam Silver is ready for LeBron James to make up his mind.
The NBA commissioner said James’ unresolved free agency is preventing the league from completing key parts of its 2026-27 schedule, including opening week and Christmas Day matchups.
“I would like him to make his announcement already, so we can finish the schedule,” Silver said Thursday during CNBC’s Sport x Boardroom Game Plan Summit in New York.
Atlanta Black Star reported that Silver explained teams and television networks are pressing the league for clarity because James’ next destination will influence how the NBA assigns its most valuable national broadcast windows.
The delay is another measure of James’ power more than two decades into his career. At 41, he remains one of basketball’s largest television draws, making his next team important not only to free agency but also to broadcasters planning games under the NBA’s 11-year media agreement with Disney, NBCUniversal and Amazon.
James entered free agency after his Lakers contract expired and informed the franchise that he intended to play elsewhere next season, ending an eight-year run that included the 2020 NBA championship. The move immediately created speculation about whether he could return to Cleveland or Miami or join another contender during the final stage of his career.
Silver said he respects James’ right to choose what works best for him and his family, even while acknowledging that some destinations could produce stronger storylines for the league.
James offered no answer during his public appearance at Fanatics Fest in New York. When Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton attempted to ask about his future during a live “Mind the Game” podcast taping, James made clear that he was not ready to announce his next team.
The uncertainty has also brought growing scrutiny. Savannah James recently defended her husband as criticism followed his departure from the Lakers, arguing that commentators have built careers on discussing him.
Wherever James signs, the decision will reshape more than one roster. It could affect national broadcasts, holiday games and how the NBA introduces what may become his 24th season.
For now, Silver, team executives, broadcasters and fans remain in the same position: waiting for James to decide where the next chapter begins.
