In an interview with The Guardian earlier this month, Boyega reflected on the loss of a childhood friend, how it shaped him and the bombshell revelation that he’s kept from the world.
Away from the spotlight of Hollywood, actor John Boyega has been quietly enjoying life and within that quiet, he’s about to shock a few people who haven’t paid close attention to social media: he’s off the market.
In an interview with The Guardian, Boyega reflected on losing one of his childhood friends to a knife stabbing, which is now the subject of a new documentary, “Damilola: The Untold Story.” Toward the end of the interview, the “Star Wars” actor playfully revealed that he’s got a wedding ring on his finger — and a bundle of joy on the way.
“I’ve been married for coming up to two years now,” he said. Although he didn’t mention his wife by name, many online sleuths have pointed to actress Lashontae “Tae” Heckard, whose Instagram profile is named “Tae Boyega.” In her most recent Instagram post on September 22, one of the images shows her reflected in a man’s glasses, which many believe is Boyega.
In her comments on the post he wrote, “So this is why you cook Pounded yam and egusi on Saturdays?? a tactical weapon of mass plan-canceling. I’m onto you lover.”
According to Boyega, he and the mystery woman wed “Braveheart” style, asking her if she would come with him. The ring he wears, a two-toned band, is “very sentimental.”
“This is the one we decided to pick up spontaneously because I just wanted the ring on my finger, so we went to Walmart to get this. It was a lovely trip to Walmart. Shout out, Walmart Canoga Park!”
However, Boyega also revealed that while he and his wife did not have a traditional Nigerian wedding ceremony, one day that is going to come.
“I would love to have a wedding celebration,” he said. “We both like the idea of celebrating something established, rather than celebrating the entry. And by then, we’ll have to shut Nigeria down!”
However, Boyega wasn’t done announcing things.
“My baby’s on the way. We got a baby cooking,” he said, while also confirming he’s the stepfather to his wife’s son. “So, you know, my life is completely, completely fulfilled in terms of family. It’s been so nice with the timing.”
“Damilola: The Untold Story,” which Boyega takes part in, is a documentary film centering around the killing of Damilola Taylor, a 10-year-old friend of Boyega’s childhood who was stabbed to death in November 2000. It took three separate trials before a manslaughter conviction was handed down for the perpetrators. Following a screening of the 75-minute documentary, in which he heard people sniffling and crying, Boyega remarked how important it was to share with his unborn son.
“It’s one of those films I wouldn’t watch multiple times because of my personal relationship to it, but it’s definitely a film I will refer to – when my child comes of age I will show him this film,” he said. “You need to know the realities of your lineage.”
