Disney+ pulls the plug on ‘Wonder Man’ months after announcing a second season

Marvel Studios has quietly changed course on one of its newest Disney+ series. Despite announcing earlier this year that Wonder Man would return for a second season, the studio is no longer moving forward with new episodes, marking an unexpected reversal for the critically acclaimed series led by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

According to an exclusive report from Variety, Disney+ has scrapped plans for Season 2, and the creative team originally attached to the project has been released to pursue other work. Sources told the entertainment outlet that a writers’ room for the second season was never assembled, signaling that development stalled long before production could begin.

The decision comes as a surprise given the show’s strong critical reception. Wonder Man earned praise for its blend of superhero storytelling and Hollywood satire, with Abdul-Mateen starring as struggling actor Simon Williams opposite Ben Kingsley’s returning Marvel character Trevor Slattery. The series also featured X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed and Olivia Thirlby.

Variety notes that Abdul-Mateen recently received an Emmy nomination for his performance, becoming the first live-action actor to earn Emmy recognition for both Marvel and DC projects following his previous win for HBO’s Watchmen.

While Disney has not publicly explained the decision, Variety reports that the show posted only a brief appearance on Nielsen’s streaming rankings after its January debut, and the platform has not released official viewership figures. Sources also indicated that although the series has ended, Marvel has not ruled out bringing Simon Williams and other characters into future projects within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The cancellation also underscores Marvel Studios’ continued preference for limited-series storytelling on Disney+. Aside from Loki and the revived Daredevil: Born Again, most live-action Marvel streaming shows have remained single-season productions.

On a Sports & Entertainment Threads post, one user, @fredtjoseph, wrote, “Canceling Wonder Man after Emmy nominations is bananas. Even when you work twice as hard…”, reflecting frustration over the timing of Disney’s decision following Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Emmy recognition.

For now, Variety’s reporting suggests that while Wonder Man may have reached the end of its run as a standalone series, its characters could still have a future elsewhere in the MCU.
