Billy Porter is opening up about a terrifying health crisis that nearly cost him his life.

The award-winning actor and Broadway star had fans concerned last fall when he abruptly stepped away from the stage production of ‘Cabaret’. At the time, few details were shared about the circumstances behind the sudden exit.

Now, the 56-year-old is revealing just how serious the situation became and why he considers himself lucky to still be here.

Appearing on the podcast Outlaws, Porter detailed how a kidney stone developed into a severe infection that ultimately triggered urosepsis, a life-threatening form of sepsis that can occur when a urinary tract infection spreads to the kidneys.

The condition escalated so rapidly that he was rushed to the hospital and placed on an ECMO machine, a form of life support that assists the heart and lungs.

“I was dead for three days,” Porter said while reflecting on the ordeal. “I am a miracle. I’m a walking miracle.”

While in a coma, the performer also developed compartment syndrome in his leg, which required emergency surgery to prevent permanent damage. He added:

“I am so grateful to be here. It is such a gift” 

The experience has also reshaped how the Emmy winner approaches speaking out publicly.

Porter recently went viral after calling out Nicki Minaj during a red carpet interview over the rapper’s support of Donald Trump.

“I had unconsciously silenced myself for fear that I wouldn’t be on the A-list anymore,” he explained. “Don’t you ever stop telling the truth again.”
