Barack Obama makes surprise appearance at WNBA All-Star practice in Chicago

The former president made an unexpected appearance at WNBA All-Star practice, celebrating the league’s growth while reminding players their influence extends far beyond basketball.

Former President Barack Obama gave WNBA All-Stars a memorable start to the league’s biggest weekend after making a surprise appearance during Friday’s practice at the newly opened Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.

The visit quickly became one of the standout moments of All-Star Weekend, with players gathering around the 44th president for photos, conversation and a message about the impact they’ve had on sports and culture. 

Obama, a longtime basketball fan, praised the athletes for helping elevate women’s basketball to new heights while also recognizing the example they set for young people watching them on and off the court.

“I just want you to know how proud we are of all of you,” Obama told the players, according to multiple reports, applauding both their excellence on the court and their leadership beyond the game. 

The practice was held at the Obama Presidential Center, making the WNBA the first professional sports league to use the center’s new basketball court. The symbolic setting was fitting as the league continues to experience unprecedented visibility, attendance and fan engagement. 

Players and cameras captured Obama sharing laughs with the All-Stars, posing for group photos and even stepping onto the court for a lighthearted defensive possession against New York Liberty star Jonquel Jones. Jones joked afterward that Obama nearly poked the ball loose, proving he still has some defensive instincts left. 

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark also shared that Obama offered her advice about navigating fame and the nonstop attention that has followed her early WNBA career. Clark said the former president encouraged her to ignore the “nonsense” and stay focused, adding perspective from his own experience with public scrutiny. 

For many of the players, Obama’s appearance represented more than a celebrity drop-in.

The visit underscored just how much the WNBA has grown into a cultural force. In recent years, the league has attracted record television audiences, increased investment, sold-out arenas and a wave of new fans who see women’s basketball as one of the country’s fastest-growing sports properties.

That momentum has also fueled bigger conversations around player salaries, revenue sharing and long-term investment in the league, issues that have remained part of the backdrop throughout All-Star Weekend. 

Obama acknowledged that growth while encouraging players to continue using their platforms to inspire future generations.

His appearance also carried added significance for Chicago, where his presidential center officially opened earlier this summer. The facility is designed as both a museum and a community gathering space, with sports and youth programming playing a central role in its mission. 

Although Obama was unable to attend Saturday night’s All-Star Game because of prior commitments, his surprise visit gave players an unforgettable moment before the weekend’s marquee event.
