At 24, Maleah Joi Moon has a Tony, a Grammy, and Netflix’s No. 1 Show

From Broadway’s “Hell’s Kitchen” to Netflix’s “A Different World,” actress Maleah Joi Moon is building a remarkable entertainment career.

Before she was introduced to audiences as Deborah Wayne in “A Different World,” actress Maleah Joi Moon made her mark in the theater scene. In 2023, Moon landed her big break when she was cast in “Hell’s Kitchen,” a play loosely inspired by and produced by Alicia Keys.  After years of starring in school productions like “The Wizard of Oz” and honing her craft in Pace University’s musical theater program, Moon was propelled into the spotlight as “Ali,” the show’s lead.

“I’d been praying, watching shows on Broadway with my school, hoping I’d one day walk those stages,” Moon told HerCampus. “It never feels how you think it will, and that’s a gift, because it ends up deeper than what I’d written in my diary.”

And that role ended up being bigger than she could have ever imagined, from being showcased on Broadway to appearing on talk shows like “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” to attending the Met Gala, to appearing in Vogue, and ultimately earning two out of the four awards needed to reach EGOT status. At just 24 years old, Moon has won the 2025 Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album and the 2024 Tony Award for Best Leading Actress. 

And now, she’s celebrating being the lead in Netflix’s #1 TV Show. Walking into the legacy of Jasmine Guy, Khadeem Hardison, Cree Summer, and more, Moon joins the 2026 freshman class of the prestigious fictional HBCU Hillman College alongside Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Kennedi Reece, Jordan Aaron Hall, and Chibuikem Uche, where viewers get to watch them navigate the ups and downs of college. In the “A Different World” sequel, Moon plays Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne’s youngest daughter, Deborah, an artistic and strong-willed young woman trying to find her place at her family’s alma mater. 

“We get to see a young Black woman stumble through finding herself, instead of doing it the ‘excellent’ way society pressures us toward. I am free-spirited — I had my Deborah phase for sure.” Moon told HerCampus. “She’s a mess, and I love that, because I was a mess at one point, and sometimes still am.”

“And that’s the wonderful thing about it … I hope that inspires people my age to be diverse in their experiences and know that the messy part is what creates greatness. That experience is priceless. The mess and the falls and the whims — it’s all part of it,” the actress added in a press release reflecting on her character. 

So just as viewers are watching Deborah Wayne blossom on screen, fans are also watching Moon continue to forge her path in entertainment and hopefully get one step closer to reaching EGOT status.
