As conversations around Mielle Organics reignite questions about how Black hair is marketed, these Black-owned brands are worth knowing.
Recently, Black hair care has been at the forefront of online discourse. This weekend, Mielle Organics found itself in the hot seat after being accused of texturism in one of its recent campaigns. While promoting its Rosemary Mint collection, the haircare brand posted a before-and-after image in which it described a less defined afro as “dull and lifeless.” The language and imagery quickly triggered reactions across social media as users pointed out how the ad perpetuated harmful stereotypes that have plagued the natural hair community for years.
