As the year draws to a close, That Grape Juice is reflecting on 31 occasions that rocked – and to some degree – maybe even reshaped the Urban and Pop cultural landscape as we know it.
First, we’ll look back on Teddy Swims sailing to the top of Billboard history books with his breakthrough single ‘Lose Control.’
Teddy Swims may not have made much noise with ‘What More Can I Say,’ the May 2023-released lead single from his debut album ‘I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1),’ but the buzz was enough to put the Southern singer-songwriter on the radar of a lot of music lovers.
So much so, it gave its follow-up – ‘Lose Control‘ – just the steam needed to push it into the Hot 100, marking a career-first for Swims when it debuted at #99 in August of that year.
By March 2024, the Joshua Coleman-produced tune had soared to #1 on the tally and made history in the process for taking the longest time a song by a solo male artist had ever taken to snatch the chart’s crown (32 weeks).
Little did chart watchers know, that ascent was only the tip of the iceberg.
By July 2025, the Teddy tune had clocked a whopping 100 weeks in the Hot 100 – weathering competition from some of music’s biggest names including Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, and more to remain a mainstay in the tally’s top 10.
As if becoming the first song in the chart’s 67-year history to boast a 100-week stay wasn’t enough to boast, ‘Control’ held on for another 12 weeks – tapping out in its 112th week. At writing, it holds the record for the longest-charting song to ever grace the Hot 100.
With 80 of those 112 weeks in the top 10, the tune also holds the record for most weeks in the chart region.
If Billboard’s controversial new chart legend hadn’t forcibly dismissed a number of aged and recurrent hits, it’s arguable the run ‘Control’ would still be ongoing.
