Talk about a full-circle win!
Tinashe has officially scored the biggest album chart placement of her career with ‘Popstar.’
More than a decade after first making her mark on the Billboard 200, the stage blazer’s latest effort has delivered her very first top 10 album.
And, given the winding road that led to this moment, the victory hits all the harder.
Full story below…
‘Popstar’ launches at #6 with final first-week sales 35,000 of equivalent album units earned in the United States.
Here’s how its milestone-making first week breaks down:
Billboard 200 Position: #6
Total Units: 35,500
Pure Album Sales: 22,00
Streaming | SEA Units: 13,500
On-Demand Streams: 13.73 million
The result comfortably eclipses Tinashe’s previous career peak, established when debut album ‘Aquarius’ reached #17 back in 2014.
What makes the achievement especially sweet is everything that happened in between.
Why Tinashe’s ‘Popstar’ Win is a Major Moment
After exiting RCA in 2019, Tinashe took control of her career and began rebuilding on the independent circuit. Her first project on that journey, ‘Songs For You,’ arrived later that year and was followed by critically praised releases including ‘333’ and ‘BB/ANG3L.’
Then came 2024’s ‘Quantum Baby,’ which housed the viral smash ‘Nasty.’
Interestingly, despite that single igniting a major commercial resurgence for the singer, the album itself debuted at #199 with 8,000 units.
‘Popstar,’ the follow-up to that project, represents something of a new chapter. Not just musically, but behind the scenes too.
Released through Tinashe Music alongside Nice Life/Atlantic, it brings major-label machinery back into the mix after years of the performer building her stock largely on her own terms.
And now she has the biggest Billboard 200 placement of her career to show for it.
The triumph also arrives just days after Tinashe candidly revealed that she had “given up” on ever winning a GRAMMY after more than a decade without even receiving a nomination.
Awards or not, one thing is undeniable: Tinashe kept going. And more than 12 years into her solo journey, she’s scaling fresh heights.
