According to reports, the project sold approximately 2,650 copies in its opening week. The figure marks a notable contrast to 2022’s ‘Special,‘ which debuted with significantly stronger sales and spawned multiple hit singles.
Adding to the challenge, the album’s singles have yet to gain substantial traction on the Billboard Hot 100, a chart where Lizzo was once a regular fixture.
Taking to social media earlier this month, the singer reflected on the shift, pointing to major changes within the music industry. According to Lizzo:
“the industry changed so much in the last 3 yrs. streaming replaced radio & I was a radio darling. That’s how my fans discovered my music. Not to mention the very obvious & public attack on my career changed things. But I’m out here doing my absolute best and u can’t knock a b*tch for that”
The highly publicized legal battle involving her former dancers was first filed in 2023 and includes allegations of harassment, weight shaming, and a hostile work environment. Lizzo has denied wrongdoing and previously stated that the reality of the situation is far different from how it has been portrayed publicly.
Whether the result of industry changes, legal controversy, or a combination of both, the performance – or lack thereof – is eyebrow-raising in earnest.
