Perry says the film was inspired partly by people he has encountered and the resilience of those navigating difficult circumstances.

Tyler Perry’s “Doing Life” began streaming on Netflix Oct. 2, bringing together Naomi Baker and Jay Reeves for a drama centered on two people trying to rebuild their lives.

Baker plays Anika, a single mother and former prison officer, while Reeves portrays Carousel, an ex-convict whose connection with Anika develops as both confront their pasts and the judgment surrounding them. Tyler Perry told People that Baker brought both strength and vulnerability to the character, portraying a woman who has spent much of her life trying to keep everything together.

Baker made her feature-film debut in 2023’s “A Lifeguard’s Obsession”. She has also appeared in “All American: Homecoming” and several short films. Reeves plays Carousel, a former inmate who previously protected Anika during a violent prison riot.

Perry described Carousel as someone who may initially appear difficult to redeem but is determined to accept responsibility and change his life. Reeves previously worked with Perry on “The Six Triple Eight” and has appeared in “Safety”, “All American” and “Nemesis.”

The film also features a supporting cast that helps build Anika’s family and community. Tamberla Perry plays Cathy, Anika’s mother. Karen Obilom portrays Trina, one of Anika’s sisters. The cast brings experience from projects including “Beauty in Black,” “House of Payne,” “Games People Play,” “Doom Patrol,” “Insecure,” “Chicago Med” and the “Law & Order” universe.

Perry said the film was inspired partly by people he has encountered. He told People that he was interested in the resilience of both groups, as they navigate through life together.
