Aaron says the discovery ended their relationship as he recovers from a severe infection and spinal stroke that left him paralyzed.
Actor Quinton Aaron, best known for playing Michael Oher in “The Blind Side,” is continuing his recovery months after a severe infection left him hospitalized and temporarily in a coma. After waking, Aaron learned that his wife, Margarita DeLeon, was still legally married to another man, a revelation that changed their relationship.
Aaron’s year took a dramatic turn in January when he was hospitalized in Atlanta with a severe blood infection that led to a spinal stroke. According to WSBTV Atlanta, the medical emergency left him on life support. When he eventually regained consciousness, Aaron faced the painful revelation that his wife, Margarita DeLeon, was still legally married to her estranged former husband.
“We would’ve never spoken if I knew she was married. I’m not the type of person that messes with married women. She kept telling me she was divorced for 10-plus years,” he shared in an interview with Us Weekly.
Aaron has since said the discovery brought their relationship to an end. In interviews with People, Entertainment Weekly, Penn Live and E! Online, he confirmed that he and DeLeon have not spoken since the hospitalization. The actor is now recovering at a rehabilitation facility after being paralyzed from the waist down.
“I don’t need to speak to her ever again. Thankfully, the marriage was voided. I didn’t need to annul it because we weren’t legally married. I dodged a bullet there,” shared the actor.
Despite the severity of his condition, Aaron remains optimistic that he will walk again. “I’m focused on moving forward,” his recent comments indicate, as he works through both the physical and emotional aftermath of the ordeal.
DeLeon has offered a different account of the marriage situation. Speaking with ABC News, she said she did not know she was still legally married and believed her divorce had been finalized years earlier. Her explanation came after Aaron’s family discovered the unresolved marriage while he was hospitalized.
For Aaron, however, the revelation appears to have changed his priorities. After surviving an illness that nearly cost him his life, his attention is now centered on rehabilitation, rebuilding his independence and moving forward.
