Teen missing for four years found alive after authorities say she was held captive since she disappeared

Investigators say Joniah Walker disappeared at age 15 and was held against her will until authorities located her roughly 730 miles from home.

A teenager who disappeared four years ago has been found alive, having been held captive for years in a case that is only now coming to light, according to NBC Chicago.

The outlet reported that Joniah Walker, now 19, vanished in 2022 when she was just 15. At the time, a switched-off cell phone became the key clue that alerted her family she was in danger.

Her disappearance drew significant public attention, with loved ones pleading for help and openly criticizing police for what they viewed as a slow and sloppy investigation, pointing to doorbell camera footage of the last time she was seen.

Four years later, Walker was discovered roughly 730 miles away in a small frame home in Blacksburg, Virginia. As reported by NBC Chicago, authorities say she had been sexually and physically abused while being held captive by 37-year-old Owen Anderson.

Investigators allege Anderson had kept her since the day she disappeared, after arranging to meet her outside a movie theater following what records describe as a lengthy online recruitment. According to the report, Anderson disposed of both her cell phone and a burner phone he had sent her to use in a sidewalk trash can.

Milwaukee County authorities recently filed kidnapping and child abduction charges against Anderson, who remains in custody in Virginia and has yet to appear in court. NBC Chicago noted that officials have pushed back on characterizations of the case as human trafficking.

In an email to the station, a police official said it would be misleading to report she was a trafficking victim, though the charges themselves lay out that she endured kidnapping, child abduction and sexual abuse while held against her will for years.

While the ordeal has ended with Walker found alive, her recovery leaves behind a trail of unanswered questions about how she remained hidden for so long.
