That’s Professor Knowles to you. For, it has been announced that Solange is starting a teaching position in USC’s music department.

Knowles will be the first-ever Scholar in Residence at USC’s Thornton School of Music for a three-year term.

This new role will bring the GRAMMY Award-winning artist’s unique perspective on music and culture into the university’s curriculum.

As part of the ‘Cranes in the Sky’ singer’s newfound duties, she’ll teach a new course focused on cultural curation called ‘Records of Discovery: Methodologies for Music and Cultural Curatorial Practices’. 

This class will launch in Fall 2027 and will take a deep dive into constructing curatorial frameworks that reflect the expansive landscapes, both sonic and visual, that surround musical expressions. This course will be taught in collaboration with her Saint Heron agency.

While taking on this role, the creative reflected on her untraditional path to academia. Sharing that she’s a GED grad and was a teen mom, but she expresses excitement about this role. She says:

“I feel really inspired by the idea of my 15-year-old self being able to have someone sort of walk me through the footsteps of what I was about to embark on.”

This residency will host student workshops and support faculty in developing long-term music curation programs.
