‘Tap In’ hitmaker Saweetie must have tapped a nerve with some critics recently when she explained why she believes her appearance has been a barrier to her success in the music industry at times.
In a clip that’s now gone viral, the rapstress (born Diamonte Harper) took to Hot 97 to chat it up about her latest EP ‘Hella Pressure.’
While dishing with resident DJ Nessa Diab about her career at large, Harper waxed honest about her belief that there’s a downside to being beautiful – a measure that she argues can and has negatively impacted her success trajectory.
“They were like they talk about ‘pretty privilege,’ but don’t talk about ‘pretty punishment,’” Saweetie told Nessa at the time (as seen in the video above). “There’s been so many times, I’ve just been counted out. And I know that it’s behind animosity. I know it’s because of a hidden agenda. But it makes me work harder.”
As the clip made its rounds on the net, the ‘My Type’ rapper found herself on the receiving end of staunch criticism – even from her own fans (affectionately known as the #ICYGANG) – with some arguing her subscription to the “pretty punishment” narrative intentionally ignores larger issues in her career.
Having had enough of the detraction, Saweetie took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to clap back at commenters individually.
“…this is why people have a problem with speaking their truth. I do that every day. I study, I elevate and I get better. But every time I share an experience that has affected me mentally I get dragged,” she told her 2.3 million followers on the platform.

Ouch!
The news comes as Saweetie fans impatiently await the arrival of her debut album ‘Pretty B*tch Music.’
Originally due in summer 2021, the GRAMMY nominee has promised the set will arrive before the end of 2025.
