If you thought the historic domination of Mariah Carey‘s perennial hit ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You‘ was limited to the Hot 100 this week, you thought wrong.
The same day Billboard took to press to reveal the tune had become the longest-reigning #1 hit in the 67-year history of its all-genre chart, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced the song’s parent album – 1994’s ‘Merry Christmas‘ – helped pencil its performer in the organization’s record books thanks to a shiny new Diamond certification.
Details inside.
On Monday (December 15), the RIAA revealed ‘Merry Christmas’ had crossed the sales threshold of 10 million sold in the United States – a measure rewarded with a Diamond plaque.
The project becomes the third Carey album to receive the prestigious honor over her 35-year career, having previously been awarded a similar certification for 1993’s ‘Music Box’ and 1996’s ‘Daydream.’
With the ‘Christmas’ plaque under her belt, Mariah becomes the third woman in the RIAA’s 73-year history to own three Diamond-certified albums following Whitney Houston and Shania Twain.
Unlike Houston, all of Carey’s certified projects are studio albums – making the Songbird Supreme the first American woman ever to have three Diamond-certified projects of that ilk.
As if that’s not enough for Mimi to celebrate, ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ – already the highest-certified female song in American history – was upgraded to 18x Platinum on Monday (December 15) for sales equivalence of 18 million in the U.S.
