Porsha Williams is opening up about a major health scare.

The ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta‘ star revealed that she underwent an emergency partial hysterectomy earlier this year after doctors discovered 21 uterine fibroids.

Speaking with Gayle King on CBS Mornings, Williams revealed that she has been dealing with fibroids since her late 20s.

The 45-year-old previously underwent uterine fibroid embolization and believed the growths were gone. However, after experiencing prolonged periods, migraines, and fatigue, she initially chalked the symptoms up to perimenopause.

Reflecting on when fibroids were first detected during an earlier pregnancy, Williams said:

“I had never really heard of them or thought of them. And then I went to the doctor and I was pregnant, and that made her, again, do more checkups. She said, ‘There’s a fibroid there.'”

That fibroid eventually grew larger than the baby and contributed to a miscarriage four months into the pregnancy. Williams later welcomed daughter Pilar in 2019.

Earlier this year, while accompanying a friend to a fertility appointment, the reality star decided to undergo an examination herself. Doctors discovered the fibroids had returned and referred her for an MRI.

A specialist subsequently found 21 fibroids, including one the size of a cantaloupe, and Williams underwent surgery just two weeks later in May.

Now, the TV favorite is using her experience to encourage other women to prioritize their health and advocate for themselves.

“We have to stop diagnosing ourselves. There are so many different things when it comes to a woman that you need to get checked, and we need to learn how to advocate for ourselves.”
