‘One of the mistakes’: Oprah reveals to Keke Palmer one of her biggest career regrets and why she never did it again

The former talk show host is looking back on her very brief singing career and why even in a bold moment, it’s one she’s not going to pull up with all of her career accolades.

Once upon a time, Oprah had a music career, but she made sure it didn’t last long.

On the latest installment of “Baby, This Is Keke Palmer,” the 72-year-old media mogul explained how quickly it went from a good idea for her to have a personal theme song for “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to an immediate regret.

The single “Run On” was used during the 13th season of her hit daytime talk show, and when she stood at a potential moment of saying goodbye in 1999, Oprah heard the Lord.

“And Jesus said, ‘You’ve got to keep going on,'” she told Palmer.

Naturally, Palmer brought it up in a moment that didn’t make the full edit of the episode. After the “Just One Of Those Days” actress sang a few notes, Oprah stopped her with a pause of her own, “Girl, please!”

While a noted actress and producer, Winfrey understood there was one gift God didn’t necessarily give her in terms of singing pipes.

“We realized I can’t sing, even though I took the singing lessons,” she said. Even with Palmer’s encouragement and suggestion that the song wasn’t “bad,” Oprah knew she wasn’t going to try it again.

Even though it was a “mistake,” there was an entire music video shot for the song. However, in a previous interview, she went on further to explain how “Run On” came to be.

“I had just finished doing this movie, it was called ‘Beloved,'” she began. “This was 1998 and before I finished doing it, I had decided I was going to end the show. And then when I came back, I signed a new contract.”

After hearing the song for the first time in a while, she told the interviewer flatly, “That song is dead to me.”

The chat with Palmer revealed several enlightening things about the mogul, who said goodbye to her long-running talk show in 2011. One of the topics broached was ownership, and a valuable lesson Oprah learned ahead of filming “The Color Purple.”

“Owning that show was the transition into me owning myself in so many ways,” she said. “And that came about because … when I went away to do ‘The Color Purple,’ my bosses at the time said, ‘You know, you only have two weeks vacation,’ and I needed two months.” And I ended up giving all of my vacation for the entire contract. I said, ‘This is in 1985, if you just let me finish this movie, I’ll give up all of my vacation.'”

She added, “Then when it came time to renew that contract, my lawyer said, ‘You never want to be in a position where you have to give up everything in order to sacrifice to do what you really want to do. What if you owned part of the show?’ And I said sure because I believed in myself, and that is the reason why I am where I am, because I believed that ownership was the way for me.”
