The British songbird has enjoyed a seismic rise courtesy of ‘Man I Need’, but rather than view the oft-used label as a putdown, Dean is questioning why having one song connect on a colossal level is considered an insult at all.

Speaking with WSJ. Magazine, the 27-year-old shared her take:
“I don’t really agree with the idea of one-hit wonder being an insult. Not talking specifically about myself, I just mean in general.
It’s like, yeah, it’s a fabulous song and it’s become a wonder because everybody enjoyed it so much.”
It’s an interesting stance, particularly given the enormous scale of Dean’s own breakthrough.
‘Man I Need’ became her first billion-streaming song on Spotify and first #1 at US Pop radio. The track also rocketed to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 following her GRAMMY win for Best New Artist.
Of course, Dean’s own success has already stretched well beyond one song.
Indeed, follow-up ‘So Easy (To Fall In Love)’ became another transatlantic hit, while parent album ‘The Art of Loving’ has powered a blockbuster campaign that also saw her clean up at the BRIT Awards.
Still, her wider point stands: if millions of people love one song enough to make it a phenomenon, perhaps “one-hit wonder” isn’t quite the drag it’s made out to be.
