The hotly anticipated ‘Mortal Kombat II’ trailer has been released and is promising high-stakes and intense showdowns.

This sequel brings Johnny Cage (Karl Urban) into the world of Mortal Kombat, where if Earth’s fighters lose, the Overworld overlord Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford) will take over Earth.

The flick will see the return of Tadanobu Asano (Lord Raiden), Mehcad Brooks (Jackson “Jax” Briggs), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero), and Hiroyuki Sanada (Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion). New additions to the video game franchise include Tati Gabrielle (Jade) and Adeline Rudolph (Kitana).

According to Ed Boon, ‘Mortal Kombat’ co-creator and head of gaming developer NetherRealm Studios, teases fans with what they can expect from the epic showdown between Scorpion and Sub-Zero in the sequel. He says:

“[Scorpion]’s certainly making appearances that are significant and necessary for the progress of other storylines. He plays a different role. He’s not part of the ‘Super Friends’ trying to defeat Shao Kahn, but his appearance is key and it is very essential for certain parts.”

Additionally, Boon talked about Urban bringing Johnny Cage to live on the project. He states:

“His integration into the Mortal Kombat story and universe is a big part of what this movie explores. He’s a washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing. Karl, his depiction of Johnny Cage is different than our games in some ways. He’s adding his own flare to it, but I think it’ll feel fresh. There’s like a novelty factor in there.”

‘Mortal Kombat II’ premieres in theaters on October 24.
