Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s widow says his death is still the ‘worst day’ of her life

One year after Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s death, his widow, Tenisha Warner, is opening up about the emotional trauma she continues to carry. In a new interview, she describes the actor’s drowning as the “worst day” of her life and says she still struggles to remember parts of that day because her body went into shock.

Speaking in an emotional interview with CBS Mornings co-anchor Gayle King, Tenisha Warner reflected on the day her husband died while the family was vacationing in Costa Rica in July 2025. According to People, she said the trauma remains so overwhelming that she still cannot fully recall everything that happened. “The moments of the day occupy my body so deeply,” Warner said, explaining that revisiting those memories is still difficult.

Warner described the day her husband died as the “worst day” of her life. She said her main focus became caring for the couple’s young daughter. She also revealed that she believes her body went into shock, which may explain why parts of that day remain a blur. When asked whether she had blocked out memories of the tragedy, Warner said she thinks the trauma overwhelmed her physically and emotionally. More than a year later, she says she continues to feel her husband’s presence in the home they shared and has no plans to leave. “There’s no moving on,” Warner said. “There’s moving with and living with.”

Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s widow said she remained out of the public eye after her husband’s death because she wanted to protect her grief. She is now honoring his legacy through River and Ember, a storytelling kit designed to help children and families navigate grief together. She said the project reflects the qualities, strength and vulnerability, that defined her husband. Warner also reflected on how people connected with her husband beyond his fame.

The interview aired days after news emerged that Warner had filed a lawsuit seeking more than $1.2 million from Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s family trust. The lawsuit alleges that financial obligations, including a promised life insurance policy, were never fulfilled. Gayle King clarified during the broadcast that she was unaware of the legal dispute at the time of the interview; according to King, Tenisha said it wasn’t a lawsuit she wanted to file, but that it was a formality based upon their prenup.
