Kelly Rowland is opening up about her long-awaited return to music, and she’s making it clear this era is all about intention, freedom, and joy.

Speaking on the ‘We Sound Crazy’ podcast, the R&B singer peeled back the curtain on her creative process, from crafting new material to rethinking how she approaches her artistry.

Fresh from her critically acclaimed run on Brandy and Monica‘s ‘The Boy is Mine Tour,’ Ms. Kelly is armed with fresh inspiration and a renewed mindset.

“I’m ready to share music. I mean, I gotta get in there and cook… you got to cook and continue to add the spices and everything to it, but it’s been so much fun.”

On Letting Go of Pressure:

“I’m not putting as much pressure on myself as I was… before it was about so many other variables instead of just the music being great. Now it’s about great storytelling, honesty—and that’s what I care about the most.”

On Her Purpose as an Artist:

“The world is going crazy, how do I contribute? Joy. Escapism… that’s what we’re supposed to do in times like this. That’s really been my center focus.”

“When I’m having these conversations in the studio, it’s talking about it, digesting it, and then regurgitating it… seeing how it floats with melody… you’re like, ‘Whoa, I didn’t know I was going to say that.’”

On Working With Jermaine Dupri:

“Germaine had started something really crazy and we finished that… I told him an idea I had been chewing on and he understood me. It was so nice to be able to speak the same language.”

“Vocally, I’m trying to jump out the window… inviting other artists in whose opinions I respect… but still knowing who I am and respecting my tone.”

“I’d love to collaborate with Sade… there’s 2 Chainz, Doechii, Snoh Aalegra… me and Victoria Monét have definitely talked about doing something.”
