It is a scenario EYEKONS know all too well. Six months after watching one member of KATSEYE quietly step out of the spotlight, the fanbase has been handed a second announcement of the same kind, and this one lands just days before one of the biggest releases of the group’s career.

HYBE confirmed moments ago (August 7) that Sophia Laforteza is “temporarily unable to participate in upcoming promotional activities,” citing a need for the 23-year-old to prioritize her mental health and wellness.

“Sophia has been receiving the utmost support, and following thorough consultations with medical professionals, it has been advised that she take dedicated time for extended rest and ongoing care to ensure a full recovery. While Sophia herself is eager to perform alongside her members, the health, safety and long-term well-being of our artists will always remain our highest priority.”

Sophia followed with a message of her own via Instagram Story.

“It truly breaks my heart to have to miss out on a lot. Making this decision wasn’t easy, but I’m learning that health has to come first. I’m realizing that if I don’t take care of my mind and body now, I won’t be able to keep doing what I love the most for so long.”

A Familiar Silence

The news carries an added sting given that Swiss member Manon has been on leave since February for her own health, with no return date shared since. Notably, Sophia had been among her most protective voices, telling Allure in June that it was not anyone’s place to rush her bandmate and that “the door is always open.”

The remaining four, Lara Raj, Daniela Avanzini, Yoonchae Jeung and Megan Skiendiel, are due to release EP ‘Wild’ on August 14, led by ‘Pinky Up’ and ‘Animal.’ A global tour follows in early September.
