Robert Downey Jr. has officially returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but not in the armor that made him its defining hero.

The newly released trailer for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ unveils the Oscar winner as Doctor Doom and sets the stage for a collision involving the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men.

After first screening at CinemaCon, the footage has now made its way online and offers the clearest look yet at Marvel’s next blockbuster crossover.

Per Marvel’s official synopsis, heroes from three distinct universes are placed on a deadly collision course as they confront an existential threat unlike anything they have previously faced.

At the center of it all is Downey Jr.’s Victor von Doom, marking a sharp turn after more than a decade spent playing Tony Stark. His casting remains one of the movie’s biggest talking points, with the trailer leaning into the intrigue of a familiar face returning as an entirely different force.

Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers are among the returning figures teased, while the preview largely focuses on establishing the scale of the danger ahead.

Joe and Anthony Russo are back in the director’s chair, reuniting with Downey Jr. following their work on ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theaters on December 18.
