Atlanta police investigate video showing officers using force on Black man near Kai Cenat event

Authorities say the Office of Professional Standards is investigating the officers’ conduct after footage from the scene spread online.

Atlanta police are investigating a video that appears to show several officers surrounding, tackling and using force on a young Black man near an event connected to streamer Kai Cenat.

The footage was posted June 16 by Jerome Trammel and shows officers surrounding the unidentified man as bystanders record the encounter. The man appears to be carrying a black bag and moving away from officers before they bring him to the ground, Atlanta Black Star reported.

The Atlanta Police Department said its Office of Professional Standards opened an investigation after concerns were raised about the officers’ conduct. The department said the review would be thorough and impartial and that appropriate action would depend on its findings. It has not publicly identified the officers.

Authorities have also not identified the man, explained what led to the chase or confirmed whether he faces charges. The uncertainty leaves key questions about the use of force unanswered while the officer conduct review continues.

The encounter happened near the original location for auditions for Cenat’s “Streamer University,” an interactive event that offers opportunities for aspiring content creators. Large crowds caused organizers to move the auditions from Atlanta’s Summerhill neighborhood to State Farm Arena.

Police made seven arrests during two separate unpermitted gatherings connected to the event, but officials have not said whether the man shown in the video was among those arrested. Charges in those cases included obstruction, disorderly conduct and simple battery against an officer.

Cenat previously faced scrutiny when massive crowds gathered for one of his events. In 2023, he was charged after a New York City giveaway drew thousands of people and led to 65 arrests. His representatives said the group recognized that its growing audience brought greater responsibility.

The Atlanta case also renews attention on police accountability in a city where the killing of Rayshard Brooks led to intense scrutiny of officer conduct and body-camera footage.
