50 Cent’s Diddy Doc Director Claps Back at Reps’ Claims It’s “Shameful” & “Illegal”: “We Obtained the Footage Legally”

Eyes will undoubtedly be glued to Netflix this week in anticipation of the arrival of ‘The Reckoning‘ – an explosive, four-part docuseries featuring never-before-seen footage of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs in the days leading up to his 2024 arrest on charges of federal sex crimes.

Produced by his longtime nemesis 50 Cent and directed by EMMY-winning filmmaker Alex Stapleton, the streaming special is described as “a revealing look at Combs’ journey from music mogul to controversial figure” that even includes “insider accounts that expose” the “troubling shadows behind his [Bad Boy Entertainment] empire.”

And while the embattled businessman-rapper sits behind bars serving four years in prison for his crimes, his reps have wasted little time slamming and Netflix for the documentary – even calling the venture “shameful.”

50 Cent Diddy documentary

Not long after making headlines for sending an exclusive statement to ‘The Breakfast Club’ to brand the documentary “unauthorized,” “unfair,” and exploitation of Combs for the sake of entertainment, representatives from the Bad Boy mogul’s team set their sights on ABC News after 50 Cent (born Curtis Jackson) took to ‘Good Morning America‘ on Monday (December 1) to promote the Netflix special.

“Netflix relied on stolen footage that was never authorized for release. As Netflix and its CEO Ted Sarandos well know, Mr. Combs has been amassing footage for decades, since he was 19 years old, to tell his own story, in his own way. It is fundamentally unfair, not to mention illegal, for Netflix to misappropriate that work,” Diddy’s rep shared in a statement – even calling the documentary a “shameful hit piece.” “It is also shocking that Netflix gave creative control of this production to Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson — a longtime public adversary who has a personal vendetta against Mr. Combs and has made a career of slandering and defaming him. For Netflix to hand his story to someone who has publicly attacked him for decades feels, to Mr. Combs, like an unnecessary and deeply personal affront,” the statement continued.

Once word of their statement to ABC news got to Stapleton’s desk, she quickly clapped back.

“It came to us, we obtained the footage legally and have the necessary rights. We moved heaven and earth to keep the filmmaker’s identity confidential. One thing about Sean Combs is that he’s always filming himself, and it’s been an obsession throughout the decades. We also reached out to Sean Combs’ legal team for an interview and comment multiple times, but did not hear back,” she said.

‘The Reckoning’ premieres exclusively on Netflix on Tuesday (December 2).
