Reginald “RJ” Harrell, 17, was fatally stabbed by a 16-year-old coworker at a Harris County McDonald’s on what family say was his day off.

Reginald Harrell was not supposed to be at work on Oct. 7. His family says he picked up the shift anyway.

The 17-year-old was stabbed multiple times inside the restroom of a McDonald’s on Louetta Road in Harris County, Texas, allegedly by a 16-year-old coworker, according to reports.

Deputies from Constable Mark Herman’s Office detained a juvenile male on arrival and found Harrell inside the bathroom. Paramedics attempted lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez identified Harrell publicly hours later. The suspect, whose name has not been released due to his age, faces a murder charge and was booked into the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center.

Preliminary findings indicate an altercation between the two employees escalated before the stabbing, according to Gonzalez, who called it a heartbreaking tragedy involving two young lives.

For Harrell’s mother, Denisha Dennis, the particulars of what preceded it change nothing. “He did not have to go out like this. He didn’t have to be murdered,” she told KHOU 11. “He did not deserve this at all.” She described the permanence of it plainly, noting she can no longer talk to her son or hear him say he loves her.

His sister, Kourtnee Dennis, said she had no reason to think the last time she watched him walk out the door would be the last time at all. “I don’t know what happened in the bathroom,” she told the station. “But I feel like he didn’t deserve to be murdered.” She described a brother who kept to himself and gave everything to the people he loved.

Harrell was a high school senior who intended to become a welder after graduation. Friends and family gathered after his death to release balloons in his memory.

Michael Gutierrez, who owns and operates the location, said in a statement that he is saddened by the tragedy and focused on supporting employees as they process what happened, adding that the restaurant is cooperating with investigators.
