Oprah Winfrey may not have known her recent statement about Whitney Houston‘s 2009 visit to her show would incite the level of backlash and commentary that followed, but she quickly found out the culture does not play when it comes to The Voice.

As reported here, O – while making a plea to a room of reporters about the importance of empathy in responsible journalism – reflected on Houston’s on-stage fall during the diva’s last visit to her talk show.

According to Winfrey, Whitney had seemingly relapsed on drug use.

“The first interview I did with her [for that two-part interview series] when we’d gone behind stage and I asked her about her intention, she was clean, but the day she came to my show then to perform in front of the audience, she was not, and she fell off of the stage,” Winfrey relayed before sharing, “I knew that if that story got out … she would be destroyed by that. And so even though the audience was there and the audience had cameras, I begged them not to put those pictures out because it would ruin her life, and they did not.”

After the comments went viral, Pat Houston – Whitney’s sister-in-law and the executor of her estate – quickly took to press to refute the notion the ‘I Will Always Love You’ singer was under the influence at the time.

“Whitney absolutely fell off the stage, but it was during a sound check, and it was due to the darkness of the area and her unfamiliarity with the stage. She was absolutely not high,” Pat shared with TMZ.

Later taking to ‘Entertainment Tonight (ET),’ Pat expounded on her initial reaction to O.

“My response didn’t have anything to do with anger or outrage with Oprah because I know for a fact on that day that Whitney was not high,” she told resident anchor Kevin Frazier (as seen in the video above) before asking,“Sister-to-sister – what happened [to you Oprah]?”

She wasn’t the only one calling out Winfrey for her “out-of-touch” comments about Whitney.
