The UK music community is mourning the loss of a true pioneer.

Sway Dasafo, the trailblazing British-Ghanaian rapper born Derek Safo, has sadly died at the age of 44, just days after celebrating his birthday.

Sway made history in 2005 when he became the first unsigned artist to win a MOBO Award for Best Hip-Hop Act. His acclaimed debut album, ‘This Is My Demo,’ followed in 2006 and earned a Mercury Prize nomination.

Known for hits including ‘Little Derek‘ and ‘Level Up,’ Sway also collaborated with names including Akon, Ed Sheeran, Kano and Lupe Fiasco throughout his career.

After his death was confirmed on September 17, tributes quickly poured in from across the music industry. UK rapper Chip and collaborators KSI and Sarkodie all paid tribute to the rapper, celebrating his impact on UK rap and Black British music.

He leaves behind four children.
