South African superstar Tyla lit up London at the GLAMOUR Women of the Year ceremony, receiving top honors as one of the magazine’s global cover stars.

The GRAMMY winner, fresh off the release of her empowering new single ‘Chanel’, delivered an emotional acceptance speech and reflected on her rise from dreaming on a beanbag back home to becoming an international force.

She recalled:

“All I can think of is, six years ago, I was sitting on this huge bean bag in South Africa back home and at this time, I had never left my country before. I didn’t even have a passport. I was literally sitting there thinking everyday, ‘How am I going to do this?’ Something that feels so impossible, being where I’m from and at the time it was COVID, I was like ‘Everything is working against me.”

Even though it seemed impossible, I was really afraid of not trying because I never wanted to look back one day and think, ‘What if it actually worked?’ I knew that I had to try. I would rather fail and know than not know at all, and wonder for the rest of my life. And it actually worked! I’m just so happy and grateful.”

Tyla encouraged the room to chase their ambitions boldly, sharing:

“I just want to share with everybody that, if you have a dream – or anything you really want to do. Just try. The worst thing that can happen is that it doesn’t happen. Oh well. At least you know. I think the worst thing is never knowing and living your life regretting not trying, because it might work. So everyone that is fearlessly trying not knowing if you’ll fail or succeed, you guys are the coolest people in the world. And I pray that it works out for you too.”

Now she’s a global hitmaker, it’s proof that brave risks can pay off beautifully.
