Tyga‘s bold reinvention with ‘$TARFACE’ has hit a major stumbling block.

After introducing the alter ego and its glossy ’80s-inspired sound with much fanfare, the rapper’s latest project has reportedly missed the Billboard 200 altogether. That news arrives just as the LP has been dealt an especially brutal critical blow.

According to chart account Kurrco, ‘$TARFACE’ failed to enter this week’s Billboard 200 after reportedly moving fewer than 2,000 equivalent units during its opening frame.

The result comes less than two weeks after the star unleashed the 10-track project, which draws heavily from Pop, R&B, Synth-wave, Funk, and Dance influences.

Adding to the sting, Pitchfork awarded the record a 0.0, its lowest possible score. The outlet branded the project “smug and complacent” while taking particular aim at its use of artificial intelligence.

That element had already become a talking point after Tyga confirmed that AI was used during the album’s creation.

He previously explained:

“We definitely used AI as a [tool]. And I know people are going to be mad about me saying this, but it’s where technology is going.”

The 36-year-old stressed that the writing and vocals remain his own and compared the resistance to AI with the initial response to Auto-Tune.

Whether ‘$TARFACE’ can find renewed life beyond its opening week remains to be seen.
