Twista is in legal hot water. For, the Chicago rapper admitted to five counts of wilfully failing to pay income taxes.

The 52-year-old artist, whose real name is Carl Mitchell, entered the plea on Tuesday in federal court.

According to prosecutors, the MC failed to pay taxes from 2019 through 2023. He earned money from performances, album sales, streaming, and royalties.

Despite repeated warnings from the IRS and his accountants, Twista did not settle his tax bills. Instead, he entered into agreements with a third-party company to receive advances on future royalty payments.

Prosecutors allege he did this knowing the IRS could not seize those funds.

Authorities also said the performer continued making expensive purchases. He reportedly bought at least four luxury vehicles rather than paying what he owed. His unpaid tax liabilities date back to 2011 and total more than $440,000.

Adam Jobes, Special Agent in Charge of IRS Criminal Investigation, condemned the rapper’s actions. Jobes said:

“Too many honest Americans work hard, pay their taxes, and do the right thing to tolerate someone who believes the rules don’t apply to them.”

Twista faces a maximum sentence of one year in prison on each count. Sentencing is scheduled for October 22.
