Despite having spent most of her 35-plus-year-career out of controversy’s way, veteran actress Tia Mowry has repeatedly found herself at the center of criticism over the last couple of years with detractors weighing in on everything from the status of her relationship with celebrity sister Tamera Mowry to her divorce from fellow actor Cory Hardrict.

The latter took center stage again recently when Tia referred to herself as a “single mom” on social media despite previously being vocal about her healthy co-parenting relationship with Hardrict.

Via a carousel of captioned videos on Instagram, Tia clapped back at critics who suggest she is misusing the title of “single mom” given Hardrict’s presence in the lives of their children Cairo (7) and Cree (14).

“Family can look different than what we imagined and still be full of love, stability, and joy,” she wrote. “This is my truth, and I want to share it. Being a ‘single mom’ doesn’t always mean a mom doing it all alone without the father present in their kids’ lives at all. I recognize that archetype is extremely difficult, and I truly empathize.”

And though she addressed the unique challenges she and Cory face as working actors balancing parenthood, she emphasized that what works for them works for them.

“It’s not even about being a ‘single mom.’ It’s about recognizing we need to normalize different family dynamics,” Tia shared. “Just because parents aren’t together doesn’t mean the family is ‘broken.’ It just looks different. Parents have to set aside their emotions and feelings for each other. They have to be there for their kids. No matter what.”

That’s not all she said.
