Teyana Taylor is rewriting the rules, stepping back into music on her terms with the fearless and fiercely personal album ‘Escape Room.’

In an exclusive interview with InStyle, Taylor revealed that she walked away from music to pour herself into acting, creative directing, and helping other artists bring their visions to life.

On her decision to explore pastures new, she said:

“Motherhood is what made me start to pour more into the other things that I love to do and also to help other people.”

That leap paid off, from ‘Coming 2 America’ to her award-winning role in ‘A Thousand and One’ and now starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Paul Thomas Anderson‘s ‘One Battle After Another.’

Still, music called her back. ‘Escape Room’ is billed as a a soulful, shade-shifting ride from heartbreak to healing. She shared:

“Oh my God, the album is so good. You can plug it in anywhere, and it’ll charge you up. That’s what I always say when people ask me about the album, because I think, with my circumstances, people automatically think it’s about one thing.”

On working with her “old friend” DiCaprio, she shared:

“That was always my buddy, but the movie was my first time working with him, seeing him in a completely different light. And him just kind of being a mentor and being a great leader, it was really dope to see. He don’t play no games with that.”

And while she’s keeping details close, Taylor has been spotted on red carpets and in videos with beau Aaron Pierre, which she says was not a hard launch.

Speaking on their relationship, she told InStyle:

“I just go with the flow, and I’m trying things a little differently… just protecting my peace and privacy.”

Taylor’s message? Escape anything that doesn’t serve you, even if it means escaping back to yourself.
