Teyana Taylor is speaking out after her surprise performance alongside Jay-Z at Yankee Stadium attracted a wave of criticism online.

The Harlem native stepped in to sing Mary J. Blige’s classic hook on ‘Can’t Knock the Hustle’ during the Hip-Hop titan’s star-studded ‘Extra Innings’ finale. However, clips of the showing quickly sparked chatter about her strained and seemingly shaky vocals.

Now, Taylor says major technical problems left her unable to properly hear herself onstage.

Teyana Taylor Explains What Went Wrong

The July 12 spectacle closed out Hov’s three-night return to the famed Bronx venue, following anniversary celebrations for ‘Reasonable Doubt’ and ‘The Blueprint.’

While appearances from Beyoncé and Rihanna generated excitement and buzz, and Usher, Pharrell Williams, and more added to the blockbuster billing, Taylor’s showing appeared to hit a sour note with many viewers.

Rather than directly sparring with her detractors, the multi-hyphenate shared rehearsal footage and explained that malfunctioning sound and in-ear monitors had derailed the live moment.

Taking to Instagram, she wrote:

“The sound & in-ears said “Not today.” But guess what?? The gratitude was louder than any mic could ever be. I may not have been able to hear a damnnnnn thanggggg. But one thing I could do was SEE.”

Continuing, she added:

“I got to see this lil Harlem girl stand beside the GOAT… in Yankee Stadium… in front of over 40,000 people who showed so much love.

If you would’ve told this lil Harlem girl that one day she’d share a stage with JAY-Z in one of the most iconic stadiums in the world….she would’ve never believed you ”

Taylor went on:

“Father God has a funny way of reminding you just how far you’ve come. One minute you’re caught up in everything that’s going wrong… and the next, He gently reminds you that you’re standing in the middle of a prayer you once whispered as a little girl in Jesus name, Amen.”

Concluding her message, she thanked Jay-Z directly:

“Jay… THANK YOU @jayz for allowing me to be a part of such an iconic night. Thank you for the opportunity, the trust and the honor. I’ll never take moments like this for granted & I’ll carry this one with me forever.

Happy 30th anniversary to the albums that changed the culture forever. #jayz30″

Suffice it to say, Ms. Taylor’s response arguably reframes the much-discussed performance as a technical mishap more than anything.
