Taylor Townsend wins US Open doubles title, completing career Grand Slam on home soil

The victory gives Townsend titles at all four majors and comes one year after she and Katerina Siniakova fell short in the US Open final.

Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova arrived in New York needing one title. They nearly gave it away in the opening set, then made sure it never got that close again.

The pair completed the career women’s doubles Grand Slam on Friday, defeating Robin Montgomery and Ashlyn Krueger 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 at the US Open. Yahoo Sports reported that finishing the set was the stated objective entering the tournament, particularly after they fell short in last year’s final on the same court.

The turnaround between sets was severe. After dropping the first, they conceded nothing in the second, winning it 6-0 before closing out the third with similar control. Whatever adjustment they made during the changeover, their opponents never found an answer for it.

Speaking afterward, Townsend widened the lens beyond her own trophy. “I also just take a lot of pride in this, being a Black woman here, it’s two Black women here in the finals, there are two Black men in the semifinals,” she said, in remarks the US Open shared on X (formerly Twitter). She called it “a phenomenal time for tennis, for inspiration, for representation,” and turned to acknowledge Chanda Rubin, telling her, “you paved the way for us as well.” She closed by noting the moment is “just getting started.”

The victory completes a run that began at Wimbledon in 2024, their first major together, followed by the Australian Open in 2025 and the French Open in June. New York was the piece they had been chasing, and doing it on home soil gives Townsend a milestone few American players reach in any discipline.

For Siniakova, the trophy extends a résumé that already borders on absurd. It marks her 12th women’s doubles major and her 38th career WTA title, though only her second US Open.

She previously completed the career Golden Slam alongside former partner Barbora Krejcikova, a distinction almost nobody in the sport’s history can claim, and has now built a second championship partnership capable of the same.

The matchup carried a substantial gap on paper. Townsend and Siniakova entered with a combined ranking of No. 3, while Montgomery and Krueger sat at a combined 1,180.

The Americans, who won the US Open junior doubles title together in 2021, had never played on Arthur Ashe Stadium before walking out for the final itself, a detail that would rattle most players in their position.

That inexperience eventually showed in the closing stretch, but not early. Taking the first set from the tournament’s overwhelming favorites, on the biggest court in tennis, was no small accomplishment for a pair making their debut in that environment, and it suggests the two will be back.

Townsend now holds all four majors alongside a partner she has won three of them with since 2024. The set is closed, the last piece claimed at the tournament that denied her a year ago, in front of a crowd that turned Arthur Ashe into the loudest room in tennis.
