Serena Williams is officially heading back to Wimbledon singles.

The tennis icon has been handed the final ladies’ singles wildcard by the All England Club, confirming what fans had been hoping for since her recent return to the grass court. And, true to form, the announcement has already sent excitement into overdrive.

Wimbledon confirmed the news Sunday night, with the tournament declaring:

“This is not a drill.”

The move means the 44-year-old will compete in singles at SW19 for the first time in four years, after already being confirmed for doubles alongside her sister Venus Williams.

Serena also reacted on Instagram Stories by sharing a graphic of herself dressed in classic Wimbledon white, alongside the words:

“Serena returns, ladies’ singles.”

The comeback adds a major storyline to this year’s Championships, which begin on June 29.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion recently stepped back onto court after almost four years away, playing doubles at Queen’s Club and again in Berlin.

Her last Wimbledon singles outing came in 2022, when she entered as a wildcard and exited in the first round. But with seven Wimbledon singles titles to her name, Serena’s return instantly makes the tournament even more seismic.
