‘Prayed for the truth’: Lizzo shares statement after lawsuit by former wardrobe assistant is dismissed

The “About Damn Time” singer was previously dismissed as an individual defendant in the lawsuit brought forth by Asha Daniels in 2024.

Lizzo is preparing to put a legal chapter behind her.

According to The Guardian, a federal judge dismissed the final claims left from a much-publicized lawsuit against the “Truth Hurts” singer from a former wardrobe assistant who claimed she was subjected to bullying, racial and sexual harassment.

U.S. District Judge Fernando L Aenlle-Rocha ruled similarly to prior claims made by Asha Daniels in her lawsuit when he dismissed Lizzo as an individual defendant in the case in 2024. Daniels first filed the suit in September 2023 and Lizzo has denied all allegations tied to that lawsuit and a separate 2023 lawsuit filed by her former backup dancers.

In an Instagram video following the judge’s decision, Lizzo stood silently while letting the text do all the talking for her.

“Today I am relieved to announce that I have won the case against me and my touring company, Big Grrl Touring,” she began. All the ridiculous claims a wardrobe assistant who worked on tour for less than 3 weeks (including a claim they broke an acrylic nail) have been dismissed. It was all so shocking because I was being sued by someone who admittedly never met me.”

She continued, “I prayed for the truth to come out and thanks to my incredible lawyers, the truth has prevailed. That truth matters more to me than anything, and I told y’all I will not settle and will continue to fight every vicious claim that has been made against me and my businesses. I’m grateful to God and my team for another victory.

“I will continue to use my platform to spread positivity and art to the world. Love to my Lizzbians, IRL and supporters,” her statement concluded.

In his ruling, Aenlle-Rocha stated Daniels was unable to identify conduct by tour company employees that would meet the standard of “general hostility” toward women, or disparate treatment between men and women in the workplace. Additionally, he was unable to find that her claim of disability discrimination met the need for the lawsuit to go forward, acknowledging that while she did have a cart rolled over her foot and was pushed by a wardrobe manager, it did not meet the standard to be deemed a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

“The court does not seek to minimize or disregard the pain plaintiff felt from these injuries,” Rocha wrote. “This alleged conduct and these alleged incidents, while inappropriate and unprofessional, fall within the scope of what the Supreme Court has held to be outside the protection of Title VII as part of the ‘ordinary tribulations of the workplace.”

Daniels’ lawyer, Ron Zambrano, expressed his displeasure with Rocha’s ruling.

“While we respect the court and the judicial process, we believe the decision improperly weighed evidence that should have been evaluated by a jury,” he wrote in a statement. “We disagree that an employee twisting her ankle and limping while trying to work does not meet the legal standard of a disability under the ADA. These are important issues because these claims often depend on how a jury evaluates the full workplace environment, the surrounding context, and disputed facts. We respectfully disagree with the Court’s approach and are considering appropriate next steps.”
