Winfrey delivered a wide-ranging talk at the Cannes Lions festival on Tuesday. She spoke about philanthropy, legacy, and her memorable interview with Houston.

The story unfolded after Houston returned to the show to perform. Winfrey explained that the singer had relapsed in her addiction.

“She had gone back on drugs. The day she came to my show then to perform in front of the audience, she was not, and she fell off of the stage.”

Winfrey knew the moment could have been devastating if it became public. Consequently, she made a plea to the audience.

“I knew that if that story got out … she would be destroyed by that. I begged them not to put those pictures out because it would ruin her life, and they did not.”

Winfrey noted that such a request would not work today.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Winfrey reflected on her childhood and her leadership academy in South Africa. She also recalled a lesson from Maya Angelou, who told her that legacy is “every life you touch.”
