Mississippi state officials have ruled Nolan Wells‘ death to be “consistent with drowning,” prompting no further investigation or charges to be filed against once-suspected perpetrators of the reported accidental death.

Wells was a Black 18-year-old whose death captured national attention after he went missing during a boating trip to Mississippi’s Horn Island over Fourth of July weekend.

Later found dead, he was the sole attendee among his group of friends to disappear.

On Monday (September 21), the Jackson County District Attorney’s office released a report indicating a grand jury unanimously found that there was no evidence to support bringing criminal charges against said friends – all of whom have vehemently denied any involvement in Wells’ untimely death.

After conducting what they called a comprehensive investigation involving witness testimony, physical and digital evidence (i.e. GPS, cell phone data, etc.), the grand jury did not support the ongoing theory Nolan’s demise was due to wrong doing.

“There is absolutely no evidence to support the allegations that Nolan’s death and disappearance were racially motivated,” District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath said via a video statement released alongside the report.

According to the report released Monday, the grand jury said it found “no evidence of any fatal injury or organic disease to Mr. Wells’ body.” And despite there being bruising on the back of Wells’ head, the exact cause of the injury was uncertain and inconsistent with what could have caused a “fatal injury.”

“The narrative that three white boys and a Black boy went to an island and only white friends returned spread like wildfire,” the district attorney said. “This was false.”

At writing, Wells’ family has not spoken out about the jury’s findings.
